  2. Fill the container with water, place it on the scale, and tare the scale to zero.

  4. Density in g/cm³ equals W1 divided by W2. (W2 in grams equals the volume of water displaced in cm³, because water weighs 1 g/cm³.)

A worked example: a ring stamped 18K weighs 8.42 g dry (W1). When suspended in water on a tared scale, the water reading goes up by 0.54 g (W2). Density is 8.42 / 0.54 = 15.6 g/cm³. That lines up with the 15.5-15.6 range for 18K yellow gold. If the same ring had returned a density around 8.5 g/cm³, that would be brass or a brass-cored fake, and the 18K stamp would be false.
