How to choose a pawn shop for gold in the U.S.

Goldiew lists 6,486 pawn shops across the United States, each with its own profile page and reviews from people who actually pawned or sold items there. Pawn shops do two different jobs: they lend money against your valuables, and they buy items outright. Reviews are where the difference between shops shows, in how offers are explained, how items are handled and how negotiable the counter really is, and no shop can pay to improve its score here. Use the map and filters above to find shops near you and compare a few profiles before walking in. If gold is part of what you bring, check the live metal price on our gold price page first, so you can judge any offer against what the metal itself is worth that day.

Pawn shop, jewelry buyer, coin dealer or gold dealer?

A pawn shop is the right choice when you want fast cash and the option to get your item back, or when you are selling many kinds of items at once. If you only want the strongest price for gold jewelry, a specialized jewelry buyer is usually the better counter. Coins that might carry collector value deserve a stop at a coin dealer before anyone melts them. And for bullion bars and rounds, a gold dealer will quote closest to the metal price.

Before you visit a pawn shop

  • Decide before you walk in whether you want a loan or a sale. The two conversations, and the two offers, are different.
  • Check the live gold price the same day and weigh your gold items at home, so you can estimate their metal value in advance.
  • If it is a loan, make sure you understand the total cost to redeem the item and what happens if you cannot repay in time.
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID. Shops are required to record seller identity almost everywhere in the US.
  • Read the most recent reviews on the shop profile and compare offers from two shops on anything valuable.

Pawn shops and gold: common questions

Is it better to pawn or to sell my gold?

Selling pays more in cash today, while pawning gets you a smaller amount but keeps your ownership if you repay the loan. If you are confident you will not redeem the item, selling it outright almost always nets more than letting a loan lapse, because loan amounts are set below resale value.

Do pawn shops pay the spot price for gold?

No. Shops resell or refine what they buy, so offers land below the melt value of your items. The gap varies widely between shops, which is why knowing the day's spot price, knowing your weight in grams and comparing two offers makes such a difference to the outcome.

Can I negotiate at a pawn shop?

Usually yes, in both directions: the loan amount or purchase offer, and sometimes the price of items on the shelves. Counters expect it. A calm, informed number, based on weight, karat and the day's metal price, works better than a vague ask.

How are the ratings on this page calculated?

Ratings come from customer reviews published on each shop's profile on Goldiew. We are a directory and review platform, we do not lend or buy ourselves, and shops cannot pay to change their score.
