At minimum the karat, meaning the gold content, and ideally the weight of the piece. For items with stones, you should also hear whether the stones are natural, treated or lab-grown, and receive a certificate for significant diamonds. Vague answers on any of these points are a reason to slow down.
Why do similar pieces vary so much in price between stores?
The gold content sets a floor, but brand, craftsmanship, stone quality and the store's own margin build very different prices on top of it. That is why comparing a truly comparable piece, same karat, similar weight, similar stones, tells you more than comparing two price tags.
