How to choose a jeweler in the U.S.

Goldiew lists 4,630 jewelers across the United States, with a profile page and customer reviews for each one. A jeweler is the craft side of the jewelry world: repairs, resizing, stone setting, custom work and appraisals. Quality here is hard to judge from a storefront, which is why reviews matter so much, they describe how a repair actually turned out, whether deadlines held and how the shop handled a piece with sentimental value. Jewelers cannot pay to improve their rating on Goldiew, so the scores reflect real work on real pieces. Use the map and filters above to find jewelers near you, then read the most recent reviews, ideally ones describing the same kind of work you need, before trusting anyone with a piece that matters to you.

Jeweler, jewelry store or jewelry buyer?

A jeweler is who you see for work on a piece: repairs, resizing, custom design, engraving or an appraisal document. If you simply want to buy a finished piece, browse jewelry stores instead. And if you are looking to sell gold or jewelry for its value, a dedicated jewelry buyer is built for that conversation, with scales and testing on the counter rather than a showcase.

Before you leave a piece with a jeweler

  • Ask for a written estimate covering the work, the price and the timeline before handing anything over.
  • Photograph your piece from several angles before drop-off, including any stones and hallmarks.
  • Ask whether the piece is insured while it is in the shop's care.
  • For stone work, ask if the work is done on site or sent out. Both can be fine, but you want to know where your piece travels.
  • Read recent reviews that mention repairs or custom work specifically, not just purchases.

Jewelers: common questions

What is the difference between a jeweler and a jewelry store?

A jewelry store sells finished pieces, while a jeweler works on pieces: repairs, resizing, custom designs and appraisals. Many businesses do both, but the craft side is a distinct skill, and reviews usually make clear whether a shop is respected for its bench work or mainly for its showcase.

How do jewelry appraisals work?

An appraiser examines the piece, identifies the metals and stones, and issues a document stating a value, most often the replacement value used for insurance. That number is higher than what the piece would fetch if sold, so use appraisals to insure, and market offers to decide what a sale is really worth.

Can any ring be resized?

Not always. Plain gold bands resize easily, but eternity bands with stones all the way around, tension settings and rings made of very hard materials can be difficult or impossible to alter. A good jeweler will tell you upfront whether resizing is safe for your ring and what it involves.

How are the ratings on this page calculated?

Ratings come from customer reviews published on each jeweler's profile on Goldiew. We are a directory and review platform, we do not do jewelry work ourselves, and jewelers cannot pay to change their score.
