PAMP Suisse gold bars qualify for self-directed IRAs

  • Fineness: .9999 (four times above the IRS .995 minimum under IRC 408(m)(3)(B))
  • Refiner: MKS PAMP SA, LBMA Good Delivery accredited, Castel San Pietro, Switzerland
  • NYMEX/COMEX: Approved refiner for contract delivery
  • Common IRA sizes: 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg (kilobar); gram-sized bars are eligible but carry high premiums
  • Packaging: Sealed Certicard assay card with serial number and Veriscan code, the standard required by IRA depositories

What Is PAMP Suisse?

PAMP stands for Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux. The company was founded in 1977 in Castel San Pietro, a town in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Today it operates as part of the MKS PAMP Group, one of the largest precious metals trading and refining operations globally.

That founding year matters. A refiner that has been on the LBMA Good Delivery List since the 1980s carries institutional credibility that newer market entrants cannot match. Custodians and depositories that hold IRA metals recognize PAMP-stamped bars on sight. You won’t face questions about authenticity at the depository, a real-world issue that can arise with lesser-known refiners.

Lady Fortuna, PAMP’s signature design, debuted in 1979. She depicts the Roman goddess of fortune, blindfolded, holding a cornucopia. It became the most widely recognized refined gold bar design in the world, a benchmark that competing refiners have been chasing ever since. When your IRA custodian, depository, or future buyer sees a PAMP Lady Fortuna bar, there’s no guesswork about what it is.

PAMP Suisse Gold Bar Specifications

All PAMP Suisse gold bars are .9999 fine. The IRS requires a minimum of .995 for gold bars under IRC 408(m)(3)(B), so PAMP bars exceed that floor comfortably. Common sizes available through authorized dealers:

The Lady Fortuna Design and Veriscan Authentication

Lady Fortuna is the design that built PAMP’s reputation. She appears on the face of each bar in bas-relief, blindfolded and carrying a cornucopia. The design has been in continuous production since 1979, longer than most gold IRA custodians and depositories have existed. When your depository receives a PAMP bar, staff identify it without needing to look up the refiner, which matters at the scale these facilities operate.

Veriscan addresses a real problem: gold bar counterfeiting. The technology works by scanning the microscopic surface texture of each bar. That texture is unique to each bar, a natural result of variation in the minting process, similar to how fingerprints differ even among close relatives. PAMP records each scan in a central database. When you or a custodian later want to verify the bar, a hand-held scanner reads the surface and compares it to the stored scan. No chemicals, no acid tests, no broken seals.

For IRA investors, Veriscan matters on a practical level. When you eventually take an in-kind distribution (physical delivery of your metals at distribution), dealers and secondary buyers who handle IRA-sourced gold check authentication quickly. Veriscan makes that process faster. Your depository’s annual inventory audit is also cleaner with serial-number-tracked bars.

Assay card integrity: IRA depositories require bars to arrive in original, sealed packaging. PAMP bars come in a Certicard, a sealed blister card bearing the bar image, weight, fineness, serial number, and Veriscan QR code. Do not break the seal before delivery to the depository. A broken seal typically requires a re-assay at your cost before the depository will accept the bar into your account.

IRS Approval: Why PAMP Suisse Qualifies for Your IRA

The governing statute is Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m)(3). It defines which precious metals an IRA can hold without triggering the collectibles prohibition. For gold bars, the rule has two parts:

  1. The bar must be at least .995 fine (995 parts per 1,000 pure gold)
  2. The bar must be produced by a refiner accredited by a recognized national commodity exchange (NYMEX/COMEX) or by the LBMA

PAMP Suisse meets both requirements. At .9999 fineness, PAMP bars sit four times above the fineness floor. MKS PAMP SA has been on the LBMA Good Delivery List since 1985, one of the older continuous listings. NYMEX and COMEX also recognize PAMP as an approved refiner for physical contract delivery. No custodian in the US will question a PAMP bar’s eligibility.

The LBMA Good Delivery standard itself requires a minimum fineness of .9950 for gold. Each listed refiner submits bars for independent chemical assay and physical inspection. The listing is not a one-time approval. LBMA conducts ongoing monitoring and can remove refiners who fall short. The depth of this process is why custodians treat LBMA-listed refiners as the baseline when vetting bar eligibility.

Choosing the Right Bar Size for Your IRA

The IRS does not restrict PAMP bars by size, but economics do. Smaller bars carry higher per-ounce premiums because the fabrication and packaging costs are spread across less gold. That gap is significant:

Bar SizeTypical Premium Over SpotIRA Cost Efficiency
1 gram25-35%Low (high premium reduces gold exposure)
5 grams12-18%Low
10 grams8-12%Moderate
1 troy ounce4-7%High (recommended for most accounts)
10 troy ounces3-5%High (good for $100k+ allocations)
1 kilogram2-4%High (institutional scale, one bar = ~$96k at $3,000/oz)

Premiums reflect typical US retail market conditions in early 2026. Actual premiums vary by dealer and market conditions. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

What those percentages mean in dollar terms: a 6% premium on a $3,000/oz spot price means you pay $3,180 per ounce. When you eventually liquidate, dealers buy back at or near spot, not at your original premium. The premium is the cost of bar fabrication, authentication, packaging, and dealer margin. A lower premium at purchase means more of your dollar goes into actual gold content.

Size recommendations by account size

  • Under $50,000: 1 oz PAMP Suisse Lady Fortuna bars. Standard, liquid, easily resold.
  • $50,000 to $200,000: Mix of 1 oz bars, or shift to 10 oz bars to reduce premium cost and simplify inventory.
  • Over $200,000: 10 oz and kilobar sizes reduce per-ounce premium meaningfully. Confirm your depository’s handling process for kilobars before purchasing.

Where to Buy PAMP Suisse Gold Bars for Your IRA

IRA-eligible gold cannot be purchased at a retail store and then deposited into your retirement account. The metals must be bought through your IRA’s custodian working with an authorized dealer, and shipped directly to an IRS-approved depository. You never handle the bars while they’re inside the IRA structure.

Goldiew has evaluated three companies that facilitate this full process, and works with them as affiliate partners. That does not change what you pay, and it does not influence this guide’s content.

  • Augusta Precious Metals (our top-rated partner): full-service IRA setup, salaried non-commissioned educators, and a structured education-first process. Industry-reported minimum rollover is around $50,000. Rated “Best Overall Gold IRA Company” by Money Magazine, 2022 to 2026. Rated A+ by the BBB since 2014. They carry PAMP Suisse bars as part of their IRA-eligible product selection.

  • Birch Gold Group: active since 2011, serves 40,000+ customers. Industry-reported minimum around $10,000. BBB A+ rated. Carries PAMP Suisse bars and other IRA-approved products.
  • Noble Gold Investments: operates its own Texas-based depository, differentiating it from competitors who use third-party facilities. Industry-reported minimum around $20,000.

For each company, verify their current PAMP Suisse product availability and IRA terms directly before purchasing, as inventory and promotional offers change. Consult your tax advisor before making any retirement account decisions.

PAMP Suisse Gold Bars: Pros and Cons for IRA Investors

Advantages
  • The world’s most recognized gold bar brand. Custodians and depositories handle PAMP bars without hesitation.
  • .9999 fineness gives maximum gold content per dollar at the standard commercial purity tier.
  • Veriscan authentication verifies each bar without breaking the sealed assay card. Faster depository intake and cleaner resale.
  • LBMA Good Delivery and NYMEX/COMEX approved, the two credentials US custodians look for first.
  • Wide size range: 1g through 1 kg. You can match bar size to your account balance and distribution strategy.
  • Highly liquid on the US secondary market. Major dealers buy back PAMP bars at spot without additional verification requirements.
  • Sealed Certicard packaging is built into the standard product, meeting the depository’s intake requirements automatically.
Disadvantages
  • Premium over spot runs slightly above generic LBMA-approved bars from lesser-known refiners. You pay for the brand recognition, which also delivers real resale liquidity benefits.
  • Gram-sized bars carry very high per-ounce premiums. They’re IRA-eligible but economically inefficient for retirement accumulation.
  • Produced by a private Swiss refiner, not a sovereign government mint. Investors who specifically want US Mint or Royal Canadian Mint products should look at coins instead.
  • The Lady Fortuna design does not change year to year. There’s no annual design variation for those who prefer a dated coin series.
  • Like all IRA-held metals, physical possession during the IRA’s life triggers a taxable distribution. The bars stay at the depository until you take a formal distribution.

How to Add PAMP Suisse Bars to Your Existing IRA

The process works the same whether you’re rolling over a 401(k), 403(b), TSP, or traditional IRA into a gold IRA. Estimated total time: 4 to 8 weeks. Rollover paperwork is typically the longest step.

Source: Goldiew compilation based on IRS Publication 590-A and standard SDIRA workflow for PAMP Suisse bars.
  1. Open a self-directed IRA with a qualified custodian. A regular brokerage IRA cannot hold physical metals. You need a custodian that specializes in alternative assets. The companies listed above handle custodian setup as part of their full-service offering.
  2. Fund the account via rollover or new contribution. A direct rollover (old account sends funds directly to the new SDIRA) avoids the 20% withholding tax applied to indirect rollovers. Annual contribution limits for 2025 are $7,000 ($8,000 if you’re 50 or older), per IRS Publication 590-A.
  3. Select your PAMP Suisse bars. Work with your chosen dealer to specify size and quantity. For most IRA balances under $200k, 1 oz PAMP Suisse Lady Fortuna bars are the standard starting point.
  4. The dealer ships directly to the IRS-approved depository. You provide the custodian’s depository address. The bars go from the dealer’s vault to the depository. You never receive them. Taking physical possession of IRA-held gold, even temporarily, is treated by the IRS as a taxable distribution, with a 10% early withdrawal penalty if you’re under 59.5. The Tax Court reaffirmed this in McNulty v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2021-122.
  5. Choose between segregated and commingled storage. Segregated storage keeps your specific bars, with their Veriscan serial numbers, in a separate vault compartment under your account. Commingled pools your gold with other clients’ gold of the same fineness; you own a pro-rata share. Segregated typically costs $50 to $150 more per year but gives you specific bar accountability.
  6. Annual fees are deducted from your account. Budget $200 to $500 per year for combined custodian and storage fees on a $100,000 account. The exact amount depends on your custodian and your storage choice.

Who Should Not Use PAMP Suisse Bars for an IRA

Physical gold IRAs aren’t the right fit for every investor. PAMP bars are IRS-eligible, but that doesn’t mean a gold IRA is the right structure for your situation:

  • IRA balance under $25,000: Annual fees ($200-$500) represent a large percentage of a small account. Most gold IRA specialists suggest $25,000 to $50,000 as a practical minimum before the fee math starts working.
  • Need liquidity within 5 to 7 years: Selling IRA-held metals involves dealer buyback, custodian processing, and then a formal distribution. The process takes time. Gold IRAs suit investors with long time horizons.
  • Want a US government-backed product: PAMP is a private Swiss refinery. Investors who specifically want products from the US Mint should look at American Gold Eagles or American Gold Buffalos instead.
  • Prefer active trading: Physical metal in an SDIRA is illiquid relative to gold ETFs or mining stocks. The depository and dealer transaction process is not designed for frequent buying and selling.

Comparable Gold Products for IRA Investors

PAMP Suisse bars are one solid option among several for a gold IRA. Three alternatives worth knowing:

American Gold Eagle

.9167 fineness, IRS-eligible via the statutory carve-out in IRC 408(m)(3)(A). US Mint produced. Available in 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 oz. Premium runs higher than PAMP bars, but US government backing appeals to many retirement investors. The most widely held IRA gold coin.

American Gold Buffalo

.9999 fineness, matching PAMP bars. US Mint produced. Available in 1 oz. Premium is similar to or slightly above 1 oz PAMP bars. First issued in 2006. Investors who want the highest fineness from a US government source choose the Buffalo over the Eagle.

Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

.9999 fineness (some series .99999). Royal Canadian Mint produced. Available in multiple sizes. Premium is in the same range as 1 oz PAMP bars. Very widely traded globally, with strong secondary market liquidity in both the US and Canadian markets.

All three alternatives are strong, IRS-approved products. The choice between PAMP bars and these coins often comes down to personal preference about the issuing authority (Swiss private refiner vs. US or Canadian government mint) and premium tolerance. For IRA accumulation focused purely on gold content per dollar, 1 oz PAMP bars and 10 oz PAMP bars typically offer the most efficient entry in the bar category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are PAMP Suisse gold bars IRS-approved for IRAs?

Yes. PAMP Suisse gold bars are IRS-eligible for self-directed IRAs under IRC Section 408(m)(3)(B). They meet both requirements: .9999 fineness (above the .995 minimum) and production by an LBMA Good Delivery accredited refiner (MKS PAMP SA). Qualified custodians in the US handle PAMP bars routinely.

What PAMP Suisse bar sizes can I hold in an IRA?

The IRS does not specify a minimum bar size. Any PAMP bar meeting .995 fineness from an approved refiner qualifies. Practically, 1 oz bars are the most common IRA choice. Gram-sized bars (1g to 100g) are eligible but carry high per-ounce premiums that reduce their cost efficiency for retirement accumulation. The kilobar (1 kg, 32.15 oz) is the standard large-account option.

What is Veriscan and why does it matter for IRA investors?

Veriscan is PAMP’s bar authentication system. It scans the microscopic surface texture of each bar, creating a unique digital fingerprint stored in PAMP’s database. A hand-held scanner verifies the bar without breaking the seal. For IRA investors, Veriscan simplifies the depository’s annual inventory process and makes eventual resale cleaner. It is not required for IRA eligibility, but it’s a practical advantage over bars without authentication technology.

Can I take physical possession of my PAMP Suisse IRA bars?

Not while they’re inside the IRA. Taking physical possession of IRA-held metals is treated by the IRS as a taxable distribution. If you’re under 59.5, that triggers the 10% early withdrawal penalty on top of ordinary income tax. The Tax Court confirmed this in McNulty v. Commissioner (T.C. Memo. 2021-122). The metals must stay at an IRS-approved depository for the life of the IRA. At distribution age (59.5+), you can take an in-kind distribution, where the depository ships the bars to you as a taxable distribution at fair market value, or sell the gold and take a cash distribution.

How does PAMP Suisse compare to Credit Suisse gold bars for IRA purposes?

Credit Suisse gold bars were .9999 fine and LBMA-accredited, making them IRA-eligible. However, Credit Suisse (the bank) collapsed and was acquired by UBS in 2023. Credit Suisse branded bars still circulate in the secondary market and remain IRS-eligible if fineness standards are met. PAMP Suisse is an independent refinery (MKS PAMP Group) actively producing bars. For new IRA purchases today, PAMP Suisse is the straightforward choice.

What premium over spot should I expect for PAMP Suisse 1 oz bars?

For 1 oz PAMP Lady Fortuna bars, typical US retail premiums run 4 to 7% above spot in normal market conditions. During periods of high demand or supply disruption, premiums can spike to 10% or higher. A 5% premium on $3,000/oz spot means you pay $3,150 per ounce. At resale, dealers buy back at or near spot. The premium represents fabrication, authentication, packaging, and dealer margin, and it is not typically recoverable at resale. Larger bars (10 oz, kilobar) carry lower premiums, typically 2 to 5%. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

How do I verify a PAMP Suisse bar is authentic?

Each PAMP bar comes in a sealed Certicard with a serial number and Veriscan QR code. To verify: scan the QR code, which links to PAMP’s authentication database, or visit pamp.com and enter the serial number in their Veriscan verification tool. For IRA-held bars at a depository, do not break the Certicard seal. The depository has the scanner and handles verification during intake. For bars in personal possession, use the PAMP Veriscan mobile app or ask a licensed dealer.

Do IRA fees apply to PAMP Suisse bars specifically?

IRA fees apply to the account, not to specific bar brands. A self-directed IRA holding physical gold has two annual cost layers: a custodian fee ($75 to $300/year) and a depository storage fee ($100 to $300/year, higher for segregated storage). Combined, budget $200 to $500 per year on a $100,000 account. The specific fees depend on your custodian and depository. Augusta, Birch, and Noble each have their own fee structures. Confirm current terms directly with your chosen company. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.
